Worn Project
Steel Mesh, Clear Vinyl, Aluminum Mesh, Wax, Yarns, Yellow Thread 23" x 17" x 10" SOLD
This was a collaborative project that I worked on with a female artist to remain nameless. For this project the criterion was very broad and was about creating an object that could be worn or was similar to something worn. The concept that we agreed upon was anxiety/ depression and body image. Being that we both had experienced with this to some degree. For her, she had issues with body image growing up. In order to gain security she began wearing cardigans as a sort of security blanket. She wore them everyday despite hot temperatures. Although there may be a feeling of safety with a cardigan, it is a false reality; once the cardigan is taken off you are naked again. The uncomfortable anxiety this can create for both sexes can be perpetuated by bad body image. Both materials and total form of the piece represent this, clear plastic vinyl and metal meshing coming together to make a cardigan that embodies the fear and vulnerability that can be created by poor body image. Within the form we hung an oversized heart shaped object and covered it in wax, this was to show how this makes your heart feel heavy. The overall form was smashed and squeezed together because this is how depression can make you feel. Yellow was chosen to represent anxiety.
